Wish You Were Here is a memoir of growing up in a working-class community in Dover, Kent, after the Second World War. Its major themes of class, shame and loss are explored through a narrative of abandonment, illegitimacy, abortion, forced adoption and widowhood. The exegesis looks at class, shame and loss in memoirs written by women of the postwar generation and beyond.
