This paper supports the exhibition 'Hybrid Craft' held at the University of Newcastle Gallery. It is the culmination of my experiences as a craftsperson/designer and embodies the notion of hybridity in my art practice and the bringing together of traditional and technological processes. The accompanying paper gives an overview of the new craft movement and looks at the rise of independent "Indie" craft. It examines some leading Australian exponents of textile design and printing who screenprint their works by hand. It also examines new technologies, takes into account contemporary environmentally ethical practices and their usefulness to the traditional printmaker and screenprinter. I argue that there is an ongoing and ever-changing symbiosis between silkscreen printing and modern technology and through reference to my own work, as well as key academic material this body of work offers an insight into current trends and practices surrounding the hybrid craft designer.
