Synaptic properties of the mammalian peripheral efferent vestibular system

Efferent terminals were first discovered in the vestibular organs more than sixty years ago, and despite ongoing effort, we have still not defined their functional role. To understand their function requires a detailed understanding of the receptors, ion channels, and intracellular signals mediating efferent synaptic transmission. Without this detailed understanding, the efferent vestibular system (EVS) cannot be successfully manipulated in vivo, and it will be difficult to establish its role in balance behaviour. The overall aim of my Ph.D. was to add to our understanding of efferent synaptic mechanisms in the crista ampullaris. I used several approaches to accomplish this aim as detailed in the seven chapters of this thesis.
