The overall aim of this thesis was to explore the structural and functional properties of the interfaces which are formed between photoactive, organic semiconducting materials and neural tissue, particularly at the scale of individual neurons. The findings presented in this thesis contribute towards a continually evolving understanding of the interface between organic semiconductor materials and neurons and have meaningful implications for the therapeutic applications of such interfaces.
