Turning Points is an initiative organised by Dr Michael Ondaatje of the University of Newcastle and The Herald, to engage readers on significant historical events. This is the second in a series of articles written by University of Newcastle staff members. The year 1788 is one of the historical dates most Australians find easiest to remember. For all Australians, black and white, 1788 was more of a starting point than a turning point.
