While this article begins by pointing out that Newcastle has provided a convenient backdrop for films dealing with surfing and male youth culture, the number of female surfers that can be found in the local breaks on even the coldest days suggest that perhaps it's time for filmmakers to start broadening horizons and looking beyond stories where females don't surf.
