Accelerated Low Water Corrosion (ALWC) of steel piling used for port infrastructure such as wharves and bridge and jetty supports has become a topic of much concern. A review of the problem is given and a recent research project that examines the influence of bacteria and nutrients on corrosion is described. It is shown that evidence of ALWC is available after only a few years of exposure and is correlated with water (nutrient) pollution.
