Automatic marking of programming assignments provides several practical and pedagogical benefits and is already possible by a variety of techniques. Recently, MathWorks has introduced a native solution for MATLAB code: MATLAB Grader. This web-based interface facilitates assignment submission, and automatic marking based on pre-programmed criteria. ENGG2440 is a second-year modelling and control course at the University of Newcastle, where in-class marking of MATLAB-based computer labs has been replaced by automatically graded assignments, primarily using the MATLAB Grader platform.
