“Kaleidoscope”: Sally Walker, flute and Philip Mayers, piano (Chartreuse label: 318420130201). A 50 minute CD production with numerous subsequent ABC Classic FM broadcasts. Recorded in the historic Frankesche Stiftung Concert Hall, Halle (Germany) by Thomas Wieber (Beorecords), this CD explores the accessibility of the music of great composers when presented with smaller works of limited technical difficulty but a high level of musical sophistication. This recording wanted to challenge that beginners should play “easy” music and delay playing the music of famous composers until later. Although this recording was designed to inspire young players to not be reticent in playing music of great composers, the popularity of the recording on the ABC as well as listener feedback questions whether this is recording is only of interest to children. Works were chosen on the grounds that they were musically sophisticated, inspiring and inviting as well as being able to be played by someone who had been learning an instrument for only a few years.
